Frequently Asked Questions
What is Fundação Jornada?
It is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to support the social and community integration of children and young people, as defined in its Status. It was initially established as the JMJ Lisboa 2023, the entity responsible for organizing the World Youth Day Lisbon 2023 event, and since 2025 it has assumed the identity of the Fundação Jornada, with the goal of supporting projects that empower and inspire young people in Portugal. It is an organization of the Patriarchate of Lisbon, enjoying legal and financial autonomy.
What does the Fundação Jornada have to do with WYD Lisbon 2023?
Everything. Fundação Jornada succeeds WYD Lisbon 2023 Foundation, a legal entity created with the main objective of organizing World Youth Day, which took place in Lisbon between 1 and 6 August 2023. The legacy – financial and spiritual – of this unique and unrepeatable moment that the country and the Church experienced is the basis for the work of Fundação Jornada. Its mission is to prolong and multiply the results of WYD Lisbon 2023, placing young people at the centre of attention and challenging them – as Pope Francis did – to “overcome fear” and act, in the spirit of the Gospel, to help make a better, more fair and more fraternal world.
What does the Fundação do?
It works with young people, for young people, and on behalf of young people, supporting projects that contribute to building a world of peace, as well as a fairer, more caring, more sustainable, inclusive, and supportive society. Each year, the Foundation will open applications with a total funding amount of €800,000, aimed at supporting projects that align with these goals.
Who can apply for support from Fundação?
To all young people living in Portugal, aged between 15 and 35, whether as project coordinators and/or beneficiaries. The Foundation’s grants are not intended solely for Catholics; applications submitted in partnership are particularly encouraged, as is the involvement of young leaders in the projects.
